Uses Medicinally:

Rue has been used for centuries as a food spice and  in traditional European medicine. It also was utilized during the Middle Ages in witchcraft and magick- namely protection and warding. It is extremely bitter in taste and gives off a pungent odor. It can be macerated as a tincture, steeped as a tea, prepared as an external wash, or used sparingly as a culinary spice. Use internally is controversial due to certain compounds, which means sparingly if any internal use is recommended.
