Medusa swirls with many myths and was looked upon as a formidable foe, since her appearance was able to render anyone who gazed their eyes upon her into stone. Conflicting myths suggest Medusa was born a monster like her sisters, described as possessing snakes, claws, large teeth, and wings. However, later myths such as in Ovid, Medusa was indicated to have serpent locks, which were a punishment from Athena due to her arresting beauty, which attracted the attention of even Poseidon himself. It was speculated that Medusa was raped by Poseidon in Athena’s temple, which attracted the jealousy and undeserved punishment from Athena, and thus giving her the monstrous (misunderstood) appearance that has garnered her a cult following.
